Piedra del Peñol the rock

The 220 meter granite monolith with the 740 stair climb sits between the towns of El Peñol and Guatapé. It is the iconic photo and the main reason most people make the trip.

Plan 90 minutes total, including parking, climb, time at the summit and descent. Entry is around 25,000 COP for adults.

El Peñol the town

El Peñol is the older town, rebuilt from scratch in the 1970s when the original was flooded for the dam. Most travelers skip it and miss a quiet plaza, a small museum about the dam history and a serious local food scene.

Worth 60 to 90 minutes if you have time. There are no major monuments, just a calm Antioquian town that lives off the lake.

Guatapé the town

Guatapé is the colorful pueblo with the painted zócalos, the malecón and the boat tours. It is the photogenic anchor of the day and where most lunches and afternoons happen.

Plan 2 to 3 hours minimum to walk the main streets, the plaza and the lakefront without rushing. More if you do a boat tour.

How to combine them

A typical day visits the rock first in the morning while it is cool, then drives 10 minutes to Guatapé pueblo for lunch and the afternoon. El Peñol can fit between the rock and Guatapé as a 30 minute coffee stop if you want.

If you only have time for two of the three, choose the rock and Guatapé pueblo. If you have a full slow day or two days, add El Peñol for the local flavor.
