Visiting Guatapé with Kids: Family Guide

Visiting Guatapé with Kids: Family Guide

Guatapé is a friendly destination for families. The pueblo is colorful, the lake is calm, the climb up the rock is doable for school age kids and the food is rarely too spicy. With a little planning the day works for all ages.

This guide covers what to do, how to pace the day and the practical things parents always ask before booking.

Climbing the rock with children

Children 6 years and up can usually handle the 740 stairs at their own pace. Pause every 100 stairs, bring water and turn the climb into a counting game.

Strollers do not work on the staircase. Babies and toddlers are best carried in a soft front carrier. Allow at least 60 minutes for the climb up if you have small kids.

Lake activities for families

The big two deck boat tours are calmer and more comfortable for kids than the speedboats. Most operators offer life jackets in child sizes and the 90 minute loop fits a family attention span.

On warm days some lakeside fincas open their pools to non guests for a small fee. Combine this with lunch for an afternoon that adults and kids both enjoy.

Family friendly food

Trout, arepas with cheese, mazorca and fresh fruit cups are easy wins for picky kids. Most restaurants will serve a half portion if you ask.

Avoid the spicier ajies on the side until you check what is in them. Most Antioquian dishes are mild but each restaurant has its own house chili.

Pacing the day

Aim to do the rock first thing while kids have energy. Lunch in Guatapé pueblo around 1 PM, then a calm boat tour or pool stop in the afternoon.

Save zócalo walking for the cooler late afternoon when both kids and parents have recovered. A scoop of ice cream on the plaza is the universal closer.

A family day in Guatapé works best with realistic pacing and an early start. Pick one big activity in the morning and one easy activity in the afternoon and everyone goes home happy and tired in the right way.
