Jet Ski Rental on Guatapé Lake

Jet Ski Rental on Guatapé Lake

Jet ski rentals on Guatapé Lake are the fastest way to see the islands and feel the scale of the reservoir. The water is calm in the morning and the channels between the green peninsulas turn into a perfect playground.

Here is what you need to know about prices, licenses, safety and where to rent the right machine for your skill level.

Where to rent

Several operators have stands on the Malecón Turístico in Guatapé and at private docks 5 minutes outside the pueblo. The lakefront stands are easiest to find but the private docks usually have newer machines.

Rentals run by the half hour or hour. Half hour starts around 80,000 COP for a single rider and 130,000 COP for a two seater jet ski.

Do you need a license

For the standard rental jet skis on Guatapé Lake no formal license is required. Operators give a 10 minute briefing and a short test run before letting you go on your own.

If you want to rent the higher horsepower performance models you need to show some experience. Beginner machines top out around 60 kilometers per hour.

Where you can ride

The reservoir is huge and most rental zones are open and clearly marked. Stay clear of the dam wall, the marked island enclosures and the boat tour routes near the pueblo.

Channels between the islands are great for cruising at moderate speed. The open central area lets you accelerate but watch for other jet skis and the wake from larger boats.

Safety basics

Wear the life jacket they give you, even if you swim well. Carry no valuables you cannot lose, the lake takes everything you drop. Avoid jet skiing right after lunch with a heavy meal.

If conditions get choppy or it starts raining hard, head back to the dock. Lightning is rare but real, and the open water is no place to be in a storm.

An hour on a jet ski adds an unexpected dose of fun and freedom to the Guatapé day. Pair it with a slow lunch on a lakeside terrace and you will leave with a different kind of memory than the standard tour photos.
